How to Get Hired as a Forklift Operator: Where to Apply and What Pays More

This page covers the next step: where forklift jobs are posted, which roles pay more, how to apply and how to avoid fake listings. Galo Hoje does not hire or train operators; the buttons below open a free public job search tool.

The real pay numbers

Forklift-related jobs paying $45 an hour exist mainly at the supervisor level. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025), the national median for industrial truck operators is $22.32 an hour; the lowest 10% earn about $17.71 and the top 10% about $30.06. Material-moving supervisors have a median of $30.23, and their top 10% earn about $46.23. In New York State, the top 10% of operators earn about $35.40.

About “free certification”

Under OSHA’s standard (29 CFR 1910.178(l)), the employer must make sure each operator is trained and evaluated on the trucks used at that workplace, and must re-evaluate operators at least once every three years. That is why many companies train new hires on site. A card from an outside online course does not replace your employer’s own evaluation, so be cautious with offers of a universal “forklift license.” Workers under 18 generally cannot operate forklifts in non-farm jobs under federal child labor rules.

How to apply

1
Search by locationInclude nearby industrial parks and choose a realistic commute radius.
2
Read the equipment listListings usually say which trucks you will operate.
3
Check “training provided”Many postings state that the employer trains and evaluates new operators.
4
Apply and follow upCall the site or agency if you do not hear back within a week.

What to bring

List any equipment you have operated, the type of warehouse and how long you worked there. If you have never driven a forklift, emphasize warehouse, delivery or factory experience and your safety record. Bring ID and work authorization documents; expect a background check and, at many sites, a drug test.

Signs a listing is fake

  • You must buy a certificate to applyFederal rules make the employer responsible for training and evaluation.
  • Offers by text with no company nameLook up the employer and its real careers page.
  • Requests for payment for equipment or uniforms up frontReal employers do not ask for money before you start.

After the job offer

Expect onboarding paperwork, a site safety orientation and the forklift training and evaluation required by OSHA before you operate alone. Ask which machines you will be evaluated on and whether additional equipment training is available later.

Common questions

Do I need a forklift license before applying?

Not always. Employers must train and evaluate operators themselves, and many hire people without prior certification.

Does my certification from one job carry over?

Past training can shorten the process, but each employer must still evaluate you on its equipment and conditions.

How often is the evaluation repeated?

At least once every three years, and sooner after an accident, a near miss or a change in equipment.

Resume lines that work

  • “Operated sit-down and reach trucks in a 24-hour distribution center.”
  • “Completed shift pre-use inspections and reported defects.”
  • “Picked and staged orders with handheld scanner, 99% accuracy target.”
  • “No recordable safety incidents over two years.”

Use only what is true for you; specific equipment names and safety results stand out more than general claims.

Questions to ask the employer

  • Which trucks will I operate, and when will I be evaluated on each?
  • Is there a shift differential for nights or weekends?
  • How much overtime is typical during peak season?
  • Is there a path to lead or trainer roles?

Safety habits for your first month

Go slower than you think you need to, keep loads low while moving, look in the direction of travel and use the horn at blind corners. Ask for refresher training if you feel unsure on any machine; it is far better than a near miss.
