How to Start as a Delivery Driver: Apply, Compare and Avoid Scams

Ready to drive? This page walks through where delivery work is posted, what each type typically pays, how to apply and how to avoid fake offers. Galo Hoje does not hire drivers or run an app; we point you to public tools and explain what to compare.

What “paid daily” and “up to $45” really mean

Daily pay is a feature of many gig apps, which offer instant or daily cash-out, sometimes for a small fee per transfer. Most employee route jobs still pay weekly or every two weeks. On earnings, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025) puts the national median for light truck drivers at $21.57 an hour; the lowest 10% earn about $14.81 and the top 10% about $38.61. Rates in the mid-$40s appear at the top of the highest-paying states, such as California and Alaska. Gig earnings are not wages: fuel, insurance and vehicle wear come out of what you make.

  • FuelUsually the biggest cost for gig drivers.
  • Maintenance and tiresExtra miles mean repairs come sooner.
  • InsurancePersonal policies may not cover driving for pay.
  • TaxesIndependent contractors usually have no tax withheld; set money aside, and see the IRS gig economy page.

Where the work is

  • Delivery apps: sign up directly in the official app or on the company’s website, never through a third party.
  • Package carriers and their contractors: route driver jobs with a company van, posted on their career pages.
  • Grocery chains, pharmacies and furniture stores: in-house delivery roles.
  • Public job banks: your state job bank and American Job Centers list local driving jobs.
  • General job boards such as Indeed also carry many listings.

What to prepare

For employee jobs, a short resume that mentions any driving, customer service or warehouse experience helps. For gig apps, make sure your insurance is current and read whether your personal policy covers business use; some insurers require an add-on for delivery work.

How to spot a fake driving job

  • “Pay a fee to activate your account”Real platforms do not charge you to start.
  • Sign-up links sent by text from strangersDownload apps only from the official app store listing.
  • Requests to reship packages from homeThis is a known “reshipping mule” scam.
  • A check that you must deposit and partly send backA classic fake-check scheme.

Getting approved faster

Enter your information exactly as it appears on your license, upload clear photos of documents and respond quickly to any verification email. Applying to more than one platform at a time is common and lets you start with whichever approves first.

Questions to ask before you commit

How often can I cash out, and is there a fee?

Check the payment page of the app or the job offer. Some instant transfers are free, others cost a small amount each time.

Am I an employee or a contractor?

Contractors do not get overtime or employer-paid benefits and usually handle their own taxes.

Who pays if the car is damaged on a delivery?

Ask about the platform’s insurance and confirm what your own policy covers.

Your first days on the road

Start in areas you know, during busy hours, so you learn the app with less stress. Keep water, a phone charger and an insulated bag in the car, and note which restaurants or stores have long waits so you can plan around them.

Keep track of the real numbers

Your earnings minus fuel, maintenance and insurance is what you actually make. After two weeks, divide that by the hours you were online. If the result is low, adjust the hours or areas you drive, or compare it with an hourly route job.

Insurance, in plain terms

Personal auto policies often exclude driving for pay. Some platforms provide coverage only while you are on an active order, leaving gaps while you wait for one. Call your insurer, explain that you will deliver, and ask whether you need a rideshare or delivery endorsement. It usually costs far less than an uncovered accident.

Choosing a vehicle

OptionWorks well for
Fuel-efficient carFood and grocery orders in suburbs
Bike or e-bikeDense downtown areas, where allowed
Larger car or SUVBulky grocery and parcel orders
Company vanRoute jobs with many daily stops

Keeping records for tax time

Save monthly earnings statements from each app and keep a simple mileage log. The IRS explains how gig workers report income and deduct business expenses, and many free tax programs can help if your income is modest.
