Color Flashlight on iPhone: Built-In Controls and Safe Options

The iPhone flashlight is white-only; iOS offers no option to tint it. You can, however, control it in several quick ways and get colored light from the screen without installing anything. Here is the full guide, based on Apple’s own instructions.

What you get with the built-in flashlight

  • Control CenterOpen Control Center and tap the flashlight button.
  • Lock ScreenUse the flashlight control at the bottom of the Lock Screen without unlocking.
  • SiriSay “Turn on my flashlight” or “Turn off my flashlight”.
  • Action buttonOn iPhone models with an Action button, you can assign it to the flashlight.

Apple lists these options in its flashlight guide. To make the light brighter or dimmer, touch and hold the flashlight control in Control Center and slide up or down.

Getting colored light on iPhone

1
Find or make a solid-color imageA photo of a plain colored wall or a solid-color image saved to Photos works well.
2
Open it full screenTap the photo so the controls disappear.
3
Turn brightness all the way upUse the brightness slider in Control Center.
4
Keep the screen onSet Auto-Lock to Never temporarily in Settings, then change it back.

For several colors, save a few images and swipe between them. The effect is the same as most “color flashlight” apps, with zero permissions.

If you prefer an app

Some App Store apps add color fades, strobes and music sync. Before installing, read the App Privacy section on the app’s store page.

  • Asks for contacts, location or microphoneA light does not need any of them.
  • Starts with a trial that becomes a subscriptionCheck the in-app purchases list before tapping Start.
  • Full-screen ads every few secondsA sign the app exists for ads, not for light.

Setting up a color show

  • Use deep colors, since pastel shades look washed out.
  • Point the screen at a wall or ceiling to color the whole room.
  • Group several iPhones with different colors for a party effect.

Battery and heat

A bright screen and the flashlight drain the battery faster and warm the phone. Use them for minutes, not hours, and stop if the phone feels hot.

Which iPhones this works on

The Control Center, Lock Screen and Siri options work on current iPhones; the Action button is only on models that have one. Apple’s guide always reflects the latest iOS version.

Flash alerts on iPhone

Besides the flashlight itself, iPhone can blink the rear LED when a call or notification arrives. This is in Settings under Accessibility, in the audio and visual section, as LED flash for alerts. It is useful in noisy places or for people who do not hear notifications well. It uses the white LED only.

Troubleshooting

  • Flashlight button unavailable: close the Camera app and let a warm iPhone cool down.
  • Control Center has no flashlight: customize Control Center and add the flashlight control back.
  • Colored screen dims: turn off Auto-Brightness temporarily in the display settings, and raise brightness manually.
  • Colors look warm: Night Shift or True Tone tints the screen; switch them off while you use colored light.

Using colored light for photos

A second phone showing a colored screen makes a small, soft light for close-up photos. Hold it to one side of the subject at an angle, keep it close for a stronger effect, and use a darker room so the color shows. This gives a creative tint without filters and without any extra app.

Turning the flashlight on fast

From the Lock Screen, press firmly on the flashlight icon at the bottom left. From any screen, swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center on models with Face ID, or up from the bottom on models with a Home button. If you use the flashlight often and your iPhone has an Action button, assigning it there is the quickest option. Siri works even with your hands full.

A brighter colored beam

The screen is soft and wide. For a stronger colored beam, hold thin colored cellophane over the rear flashlight. The beam keeps the LED’s brightness and takes on the color of the film. Remove it after use and never wrap the phone in a way that traps heat.

Using Shortcuts

The Shortcuts app included with iOS has an action to set the flashlight on, off or to a brightness level. You can create a shortcut that turns the flashlight on at half brightness and add it to your Home Screen. It is a built-in, permission-free alternative to many single-purpose flashlight apps.

Privacy labels explained

Every App Store page has an App Privacy section listing data the developer says it collects, such as contact info, location or identifiers used for tracking. For a light app, a short or empty list is a good sign. A long list of data “used to track you” is a reason to choose something else.

Can I change the color of the iPhone flashlight itself?

No. The rear LED is white; color has to come from the screen.

Why is the flashlight button grayed out?

It can be unavailable while the camera is in use or when the phone is too warm.

Do strobe effects pose any risk?

Quick flashing may set off seizures for anyone with photosensitive epilepsy.
